Painted dragon
Ctenophorus pictus
When first seen the attractive male Painted Dragon often takes
your breath away. During the peak of its breeding season the male
displays a vivid array of blues, yellows an reds, while the female
is much less colourful.
This species is unusual in that at the end of its reproduction
cycle nearly all breeding adults will die. This means that most
Painted Dragons will only live for one year but three year life
cycles have been recorded.
Painted dragons live in sandy habitats and feed extensively on
ants but they also consume some vegetation.
